PROJECT SUMMARY
The current Grand Caillou Middle located in Dulac, LA has flooded seven times due to major hurricanes which often left students in temporary transfer schools or without school for weeks. This state of the art facility designed to withstand 150 mph wind gusts stands 10 feet above sea level and is two stories tall, with all the classrooms, computer labs and other vital academic areas a floor off the ground leaving a 15,630-square-foot covered outdoor area underneath.  It is made of materials that are easy to maintain and clean such as concrete block and plaster, so the process of recovering from flooding will be much easier. The new school will serve about 450 fifth- through eighth-graders.
The cafetorium serves as a dining area and an auditorium. For special events, the student mall becomes a lobby area prior to the event and a back of house during. The master plan accommodates a future academic wing for population growth and a gymnasium when funds are available. A large canopy constructed of blue metal panels highlights the entry and protects the student drop off area. A continuous anodized aluminum canopy system flanks the entire front elevation for efficient bus loading.
This very modern design and elegant composition of plaster, concrete block, metal panels and blue tinted glass will be a proud representation of community image for decades.
